Paper tearing seems to be all the rage lately in scrapping and while the idea sounds simple, the results may not be what you had invisioned. Here are some tips on paper tearing that may help you achieve the look you are going for......

* you can achieve 2 different types of torn edges, depending on which direction you tear your paper, pulling the paper away from yourself will give more of a double edge look, you'll get the white core paper showing up. Pulling the paper towards yourself you'll get a tear that shows only the patterned paper.

* to get a more 'feathered' edge you can try wetting a Q-tip in some water and running it in an uneven jaggedy line, then when you tear your paper it will follow that line, it's a quick fool-proof way to tear, and your edges will have a softer effect. Practice on a piece of scrap paper before you try it on your main layout, just to get a feel for it.

* I love to ink my edges after I've torn then to give them more of a defined edge. If you used a brown chalk ink, you can get a 'burnt' look to the edge.

* get more texture to your tears by curling the edges up, make a few extra small tears along the edges, that go a little deeper into the page. Use the tip of your finger or your thumb to roll the edges inward.

* get creative with the tearing and try doing a deeper tear and stitch over it in a lace-up design.....or put another bit of patterned paper underneath it peeking through.

Paper tearing can add so much visual texture to a page, so why not try it on your next layout! Any questions? talk to me, I'll see if I can help!

Those are some great tips Gabi!! Thanks for sharing! I've basically only done the tearing towards me and the inking part so I'm gonna try some of your tips to become an improved tearer! smile.gif

Personally I love the lace-up design. I've seen that on a couple of your LO's and it's gorgeous!

Great tips, Gabi! I've been noticing that more and more people are beginning to use paper tearing again. I personally love the texture that tearing gives to a layout!

I have also used chalk to give it a very soft look. I like the way I can make the white core more uniform with my layout using chalk.

There is also a paper that is black and has a colored core. I can't remember the name of it for sure, but it is very cool looking!

If you want textured cardstock that has a white core, Die Cuts with a View offers that. It's great because you can also buy it in the paper pads which makes it a very reasonable price!!

Oh yes!! Robbie, I know the papers you're talking about I believe they are called Co-ordinations. I like the ones that are black with different bright colour insides, but I haven't tried them yet!

Great tips Gabi!!!! I love paper tearing too! Somewhere in my stash I used to have a jagged edged paper tearing ruler.....Fiskars brand I think. It worked great on regular weight paper, but now days so many papers are a heavier weight (which I personally love) but sometimes I find them hard to tear, so I'm going to try your water & Q-tip technique!!! Thanks so much for sharing!!!

Nice, Gabi! This is one of my very fav techniques...especially rolling the edges after wetting them. Just love that grungy, distressed look. TFS!

Oh I had forgotten the technique to roll the edges when they are wet and then they dry and stay that way

I also love the distressed look...Keep those ideas coming

I like to tear fabric and use on layouts--it frays and can make a nice edge for a photo mat

I have not torn in a while I remember it being good therapy---hehe

Love the idea of wetting the paper with a Qtip before tearing, and then curling up the edges. Will definitely be trying that!
